Corset Lacing

There are many different ways to lace a corset. from the traditional horizontal lacing and the ladder style through to the more modern day Tennis shoe style and the tight lacing cross over. The method we advise is as below, it allows for both self lacing and assisted lacing.

Before starting to thread ensure there are no knots, tears or damage to the lace. Inspect the corset too for tears and rips, under the pressure of a correctly laced corset, a small tear can very quickly grow.

Follow these steps carefully.

  • Count number of eyelets and find middle ones which are the waist point.
  • When threading, laces go 'inside to out' never 'outside to in' (except top centre eyelets.)

  • At waist, pull laces totally through and check they are equal.

  • Lace bottom section loosely and tie knots at base before tightening laces

Another method is to use 2 pieces of lace. Lace the first as normal, but instead of looping the lace in the middle, finish the first lace at the waist, use the second lace to lace the bottom half in the same manner.

It is useful to have someone assisting, but it is possible to put your corset on without help.

Loosen off the lacing then put the corset round you and fasten the front busk. Do the top clasp first and the rest should follow.

Pull the loops gently then tighten the lacing progressively towards the middle from both top and bottom until you are happy with the fit. There should be a pleasant 'hugging' sensation, but you should still be comfortable.

To finish, tie the ends in a bow at back or front.

DO NOT overtighten or you will damage your corset; corsets mould to the body after a short period and the material takes the strain evenly, then you can go a little tighter.

One last tip: if you are going to wear stockings and shoes with your corset, it is a good idea to put them on before tightening the laces, as most people are unused to the straight back a corset gives and find it hard to bend down!
